Drilling, foundations and specialised machines

Drilling rig

Boring a well, a micropile, a soil investigation, an anchor.
A dedicated machine:
it does only that, and it does it better than an equipped excavator.

Other names for this machine: borer, sounding rig, drilling outfit.

01 Use

What it does

Silhouette of a drilling rig: a tracked carrier, a turret, and an upright mast along which a drive head slides. Under the mast, a helical auger goes down into the ground and brings the spoil back up. Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.
What sets it apart:
it is dedicated to drilling — an equipped excavator does not do it as well.

Drilling a well, a micropile, a ground investigation, an anchor.

What it does not do. A dedicated machine:
it does only that, and it does it better than an equipped excavator.

02 Fitting
A tracked drilling rig, vertical mast carrying a helical auger engaged in the ground, the spoil brought up along the flight. Foundation site with reinforcement, workers and equipment in the background.
The auger goes down by turning:
it brings the soil up along the flight instead of pushing it.
Synthetic image.
The auger of a drilling rig on its way down, the soil brought up in a spiral around the screw, on a foundation site.
The mast fixes the depth that can be reached:
everything else can be made up for, that cannot.

What governs the fitting of an attachment

  • The boring tool and its diameter Auger, chisel, bit, core barrel:
the tool follows the ground, not the other way round.
  • The torque and thrust available They decide what the machine goes through, and how fast it goes through it.
  • The method of support Casing, slurry, hollow auger:
it is chosen on the nature of the soil and the presence of water.
  • Access and headroom The mast governs access as much as the weight of the machine does.
03 Reference point

One model, as a reference point

The values below hold for this model only.
They are there to give an order of magnitude to anyone who has none, not to serve as a reference.

Soilmec SR-45
Maximum rotation torque
170,3 kNm
Boring diameter
350 to 3,000 mm
Boring depth
23 to 69.7 m depending on the configuration
Weight
37 to 40 t
Engine power
209 kW

Caveat. The spread in depth, from 23 to nearly 70 m, comes from the drilling method chosen.
A drilling rig is chosen on the ground and the technique, not on a maximum figure.

These values are those of one precise model, at one precise date. They do not describe a category:
there are no characteristics of a compact loader in general, there are those of the model you have.
They change from one year to the next and never replace the data sheet of your machine.
