Scraper

Loading on the move, carrying, spreading on the move.
Mass earthmoving over long distances — a trade that no longer exists in town.

Other names for this machine: scraper, 'the scrap'.

01 Use

What it does

Silhouette of a self-propelled scraper: tractor and cab at the front, an articulation, and in the centre a bowl whose blade planes the ground, the soil rushing into the body. Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.
What sets it apart:
it loads on the move — no excavator, no lorry, a single machine does all three actions.
Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.

Loading on the move, carrying, spreading on the move.
Mass earthmoving over long distances.

What it does not do. It needs room and volume.
On an urban site, it makes no sense.

02 Fitting
A self-propelled scraper — tractor and bowl — stripping a strip of ground over a large earthworks area, the bowl filling from the front; excavators and lorries are working in the background.
It loads on the move, without stopping:
that is what makes it unbeatable over large areas, and useless anywhere else.

What decides its use

  • The volume and the distance They are what decide whether this machine has a place on the site, or whether another will do the same work for less.
  • The room available A machine that cannot manoeuvre does not produce, whatever its capacity.
  • The rate of the neighbouring machines It is rarely calculated and often costs more than the hire:
a machine that waits costs as much as a machine that works.
  • Transport to the worksite It governs what can actually be sent, and it is settled before everything else.
03 Reference point

One model, as a reference point

The values below hold for this model only.
They are there to give an order of magnitude to anyone who has none, not to serve as a reference.

Caterpillar 651
Bowl capacity
24.5 and 33.6 m³ depending on the method of measurement
Payload
47 174 kg
Net power
436 kW, that is 585 hp at 2,000 rpm
Unladen weight
74,253 kg, tanks full, without a driver

Caveat. The source consulted swaps the labels “struck” and “heaped”:
it announces 24.5 m³ heaped and 33.6 m³ struck, which is impossible.
I give both figures without settling the matter:
to be checked against the original sheet.

Source. Caterpillar technical data sheet, reference AFXQ3297-01,
document of November 2022, recorded on 1 September 2026.

These values are those of one precise model, at one precise date. They do not describe a category:
there are no characteristics of a compact loader in general, there are those of the model you have.
They change from one year to the next and never replace the data sheet of your machine.

Have your machine checked.

Give us the exact model and the work you have in mind.
We check the coupler, the flow, the pressure and the capacity on your machine, and we tell you what fits on it — and what does not.
