Heavy earthmoving and grading

Grader

A blade placed between the axles, and a surface that at last takes the required slope.
It grades.
It does not do earthworks:
the earthworks have to be done before it.

Other names for this machine: grader, 'the grader'.

01 Use

What it does

Silhouette of a motor grader: very long chassis on six wheels, cab at the rear, and a swivelling blade placed under the chassis, between the front axle and the rear wheels. Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.
What sets it apart:
the blade is UNDER the chassis, not in front of it — that is what gives it its grading accuracy.
Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.

Grading a surface to the required slope with a blade placed between the axles.
Haul roads, platforms, capping layers.

What it does not do. It grades, it does not move volume.
It needs the earthworks to have been done already.

02 Fitting
A motor grader grading a platform, its long blade set at an angle under the chassis between the axles, a roll of material running ahead of it; a roller is working further along the same haul road.
The blade is between the axles, and that is the whole principle:
it follows the design, not the bumps in the ground.

What decides its use

  • The volume and the distance They are what decide whether this machine has a place on the site, or whether another will do the same work for less.
  • The room available A machine that cannot manoeuvre does not produce, whatever its capacity.
  • The rate of the neighbouring machines It is rarely calculated and often costs more than the hire:
a machine that waits costs as much as a machine that works.
  • Transport to the worksite It governs what can actually be sent, and it is settled before everything else.
03 Reference point

One model, as a reference point

The values below hold for this model only.
They are there to give an order of magnitude to anyone who has none, not to serve as a reference.

These values are those of one precise model, at one precise date. They do not describe a category:
there are no characteristics of a compact loader in general, there are those of the model you have.
They change from one year to the next and never replace the data sheet of your machine.
