Dump truck

Carrying the material on a haul road, off the highway, between extraction and treatment.
It does not load itself:
it waits for an excavator or a loader, and it is that waiting that costs.

Other names for this machine: articulated dumper, rigid dumper, 'quarry dump truck'.

01 Use

What it does

Silhouette of an articulated dump truck: cab and driven axle at the front, central articulation, and at the rear a large body carried on two axles. Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.
What sets it apart:
it carries its load on a haul road, where a road lorry would not get through.
Diagrammatic silhouette, without dimensions and not to scale.

Carrying material on haul roads, off-road, between the extraction point and the treatment point.

What it does not do. It does not load itself.
It waits for an excavator or a loader.

02 Fitting
An articulated dump truck, body full of blocks, climbing an earthworks haul road in a large cutting; excavators and loaders are working on the benches at the back.
It is made for the haul road, not for the highway:
off the site, it does not travel under its own power.

What decides its use

  • The volume and the distance They are what decide whether this machine has a place on the site, or whether another will do the same work for less.
  • The room available A machine that cannot manoeuvre does not produce, whatever its capacity.
  • The rate of the neighbouring machines It is rarely calculated and often costs more than the hire:
a machine that waits costs as much as a machine that works.
  • Transport to the worksite It governs what can actually be sent, and it is settled before everything else.
03 Reference point

One model, as a reference point

The values below hold for this model only.
They are there to give an order of magnitude to anyone who has none, not to serve as a reference.

Caveat. A dump truck does not load:
it waits.
Its payload is worth something only in relation to the rate of the excavator or loader that fills it.

These values are those of one precise model, at one precise date. They do not describe a category:
there are no characteristics of a compact loader in general, there are those of the model you have.
They change from one year to the next and never replace the data sheet of your machine.
