Stump grubbing claw

Stump-pulling claw on the arm of an excavator bringing out a whole stump, roots showing, on a cleared forestry plot
The tines pass under the stump, the arm acts as a lever:
it comes out whole, with its roots.
Synthetic image.

Long tines, passed under the stump, and the whole force of the arm behind them.
It wears nothing away:
it pulls out, and it brings the whole stump up.

Other names for this tool: stump claw, stump-pulling tooth, stump hook, stump extractor.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the teeth go under the stump and the arm levers it out, it comes out whole with its roots. On the right, the stump grinder chews the stump up where it stands, without opening the ground, it is the other tool. Computer-generated image.

Left: the teeth go under the stump and the arm levers it out, it comes out whole with its roots.
Right: the stump grinder chews the stump up where it stands, without opening the ground, it is the other tool.
Computer-generated image.
The tines of a claw passed under a stump, the arm acting as a lever, the stump coming loose with its roots and the soil lifted.
It is work by force, not by rotation:
the stump comes out whole, with what was holding it.
Synthetic image.

The tines are passed under the stump and the arm acts as a lever:
the stump comes loose with its roots.
It is work by force, not by rotation — hence a simple tool, with no hydraulics, whose whole performance comes from the machine.

It is used when the ground has to be opened anyway:
the complete reworking of a plot, the preparation of a platform, earthworks to follow, replanting with a pit.
What comes out is bulky and mixed with soil, and that is planned for before starting.

What the claw leaves behind is a job in itself: a hole to be closed, and a stump laden with soil that does not easily fit in a skip.
If your need is simply to make a stump disappear without opening the ground, it is the other tool you want. See the stump grinder.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

A stump grubbing claw fits excavators from 1 to 40 t.
On an excavator from 14 to 16 t: a claw of 105 kg, to be checked with you.
On an excavator from 30 to 40 t: 490 kg, to be checked with you.
It is mounted with lugs and pins, or on all quick couplers via a mounting plate.
Backhoe or face-shovel: both mountings are possible.

What the tool does

This tool is used for stump removal, to maintain green spaces.
Its width ranges from 320 to 600 mm, and its height from 712 to 1 140 mm.
Some models are made of E36 steel.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It is a passive tool: no hydraulic connection is needed.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Tell us the number of stumps, their species, their size, and what becomes of the ground afterwards.
If the ground must not be opened, say so:
we will point you towards the grinder.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The size and species of the stumps A shallow-rooted conifer and a tap-rooted broadleaf do not come loose with the same force.
  • 02 — The length of the tines Too short, they slip under the stump without taking it;
too long, they tire the tool at the first hard point.
  • 03 — Taking the lever forces This tool loads the dipper arm differently from a bucket.
It is there that the quality of the construction shows.
  • 04 — What becomes of the stumps pulled out Carting away, mulching, stockpiling:
the volume brought out is always a surprise.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The machine's load chart in breakout force The stump resists longer than you think, and it is the machine that gives way first.
  • The buried services A root sometimes follows a trench.
The declaration is made before digging, without exception.
  • Reinstating the ground The hole and the disturbed soil have to be dealt with:
it is part of the job, not of what comes afterwards.
  • The disposal channel A stump mixed with soil is not ordinary green waste:
that point is settled with the client.
