Coupler safety check valve

Close-up of a steel safety check valve block, bolted on the bracket of a coupler and connected to three braided hoses by crimped fittings; the rest of the machine is blurred.
It is of use only on the day a line lets go:
on that day, it holds the tool, with the locking and the circuit provided by the manufacturer.
Synthetic image.

It prevents the coupler from opening if a line lets go, as long as the locking and the circuit are the manufacturer's and checked at every tool pick-up.
It is what stands between the tool and the ground on the day something breaks.

Other names for this tool: pilot-operated check valve, non-return valve, coupler ram safety, double safety.

01 Use

What it is for

A hydraulic coupler is held closed by a ram.
If the pressure drops — a hose torn off, a coupling that lets go — there is nothing left to hold the ram.
The check valve blocks the oil as close as possible to the ram and keeps the locking, with the fitting and the circuit provided by the manufacturer.

It comes in addition to a mechanical safety device, not in its place.
The so-called double-safety devices combine the two, and it is that combination that makes the arrangement safe, with the locking and the circuit provided by the manufacturer, and a check at every tool pick-up.

On the left, with a hose torn off, the valve mounted on the cylinder holds the oil in and the coupler keeps the tool. On the right, with no valve right at the cylinder, the broken line drains the lock and the tool comes loose. Computer-generated image.

Left: with a hose torn off, the valve mounted on the cylinder holds the oil in and the coupler keeps the tool.
Right: with no valve right at the cylinder, the broken line drains the lock and the tool comes loose.
What breaks upstream does not empty what locks:
the check valve is fitted as close as possible to the ram.
It completes a mechanical safety device, it does not replace it.

A pilot-operated check valve fitted on a hydraulic circuit, its three fittings equipped with hoses, and its slotted setting screw locked by a lock nut.
The setting screw decides the pressure at which it opens:
the lock nut is there so that it moves no more.

That point is not negotiable: it is the tool falling that is at stake, and it falls where people are working.
If there is any doubt about the device fitted on your machine, it is cleared up before the next job, not after. See the double safety.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

It suits all machines fitted with a hydraulic coupler.
It fits on the coupler's control line.
The machine class and the fitting details: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What the tool does

It is a safety check valve for the control line of a hydraulic coupler.
The weight of the valve alone: we calculate it with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It runs on the hydraulics of the coupler control line.
The minimum locking and unlocking pressure, and the connection: we calculate them with you for your machine.

Your study sets the exact value for your machine.

Don't have these figures?
A photo of the machine is enough to start.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Tell us the type of coupler you have and its year.
If you do not know what device it carries, a photograph of the coupler and its ram will be enough for us to say.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its exact make and model.
  • What is fitted What equips the machine today.
  • The work What the machine is used for.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The device already fitted Many couplers have one as original equipment.
    Checking it takes five minutes.
  • 02 — The type of check valve Pilot-operated or not:
the behaviour in case of pressure loss is not the same.
  • 03 — The fitting position As close as possible to the ram:
a check valve far away leaves a volume of oil that can escape.
  • 04 — Consistency with the mechanical safety device One does not replace the other.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The actual presence of a device On the machine, not in the handbook.
  • Its condition A check valve is a part that ages.
  • The movement asked of the driver A mechanical safety device that is not engaged protects nobody.
  • The conformity of the whole It is justified by documents, which must exist and be up to date.
