Kerb grab
Gripping, lifting and positioning a kerbstone from the machine.
One model
recorded is given for excavators from 5 to 16 tonnes, with rotation through 360°.
Other names for this tool: kerb handling grab, kerbstone grab, kerb-laying grab, laying grab, block grab, rotating handling grab.

What it is for
Right: laid by hand, the kerbstones end up crooked along the string line.
What sets it apart:
it is first of all an occupational health tool — the time saved comes afterwards.
Computer-generated image.
Two jaws squeeze the kerbstone on its faces.
The machine lifts it, presents it to the
millimetre along the line, and lays it.
The rotation makes it possible to turn it over or
to orient it without letting go.
A concrete kerbstone weighs several dozen kilos and is laid by the
hundred metres.
Without a tool, it is work for two or three people, bent
over, at ground level, all day long.
It is first of all an occupational health tool. Laying
kerbs by hand is a recognised cause of musculoskeletal disorders and
of crushing injuries to hands and feet.
On a public contract, that
argument often counts as much as the output — and it can be defended in a
technical statement.
Why the rotation changes everything
A kerbstone has a right way round:
a visible face, a chamfer, sometimes a curve.
Without
rotation, it has to be set down and picked up again to turn it over — so put down,
handled by hand, gripped again.
With rotation, the operator presents it directly the right way round.
That is what
does away with the manual handling, and so with most of the risk.
A tool for linear work
It is justified over distance:
kerbs, channels, car park kerbs,
precast low walls.
Over ten metres, it does not pay for itself; on a
housing estate or a road refurbishment, it changes the make-up of
the gang.
On which machine?
A kerb grab fits an excavator from 5 to 16 t.

What the tool does
It grips kerbs, for road works.
It swivels through 360°.
Its maximum load, its gripping range and its weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.
What is needed on the hydraulic side
It connects to the excavator's hydraulics.
The flow and pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.

Your study sets the exact value for your machine.
Don't have these figures?
A photo of the machine is enough to start.
Have your machine checked.
Give us your excavator model, the dimensions and weight of the kerbstones, and the
length to be laid.
If the job is a public contract, say so:
the prevention
argument can be documented.
- Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
- The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
- The coupler in place Its system and its class.
- The work The use, and the material.
Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

What determines the choice
-
01 — The dimensions of the units to be laid
The width, height and length of the kerbstones fix the opening of the jaws.
A site that mixes kerbs and channels calls for a wider opening range. -
02 — The unit weight
It determines both the capacity of the grab and the permissible reach of the
machine.
A heavy kerbstone laid far from the excavator is the critical case. -
03 — The rotation
It calls for a second hydraulic function.
Without it, the tool keeps its value but loses part of its benefit. -
04 — The contact with the unit
Badly suited jaws mark or split a thin concrete kerbstone.
The facing of the jaws is chosen with the material.
What is checked before ordering
-
The lifting framework
Gripping and moving a load above the ground comes under lifting.
The machine must be equipped accordingly, and the periodic inspections apply. See the lifting section. -
The load chart at the laying reach
Laying is often done at the edge of an excavation, arm extended, machine on reworked ground.
It is the worst case, and it is the real case. -
The two hydraulic functions
Squeezing and rotation.
The free return to tank is checked as well. -
Holding safety in case of pressure loss
A load that falls during laying is an accident.
The holding device is not an option. - The interface Coupler type and size, or pin dimensions.
