Sheet-pile vibratory driver

A vibratory driver hanging from the arm, clamps closed on a sheet pile it is driving into the ground; the wall already placed continues step by step, an urban worksite.
No blow, a vibration:
and what has been vibro-driven is withdrawn by the same process.
Synthetic image.

The principle is that of the vibratory pile driver:
no blow, a vibration that makes the friction of the soil collapse.
What changes here is what the clamp grips — a sheet-pile section, not a stake.

Other names for this tool: hydraulic vibratory driver, sheet-pile driver, driving vibrator, vibratory driving head.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the vibratory driver sinks the sheet pile, guided by the interlock of the previous one. On the right, the same process extracts the sheet piles, intact, for another job. Computer-generated image.

Left: the vibratory driver sinks the sheet pile, guided by the interlock of the previous one.
Right: the same process extracts the sheet piles, intact, for another job.
What sets it apart:
reversibility — that is what separates vibratory driving from percussion driving.
Computer-generated image.
The open housing of a vibratory driver: two half-moon eccentric weights on their shafts, and the synchronising gears meshed between them.
It is the gears that make the vibration useful:
out of synchronisation, the weights would fight each other instead of adding up.
Synthetic image.

Eccentric weights set the section vibrating at high frequency.
The friction between the steel and the ground collapses, and the sheet pile goes down under its own weight and that of the machine.
The wall is built step by step, each element guided by the interlock of the previous one.

The real argument is reversibility.
Trench shoring, a temporary platform, a cofferdam:
what has been vibro-driven is withdrawn by the same process, without breaking the head of the section, and the steel goes off to another job.
That is what separates vibratory driving from percussion driving.

Vibration travels through the ground, and it does not stop at the property line. An old adjoining building, a buried structure, a railway, neighbours:
this question is asked before the job and settled with the client, not at the foot of the wall.
We publish no threshold, because it depends on the site. Let us take stock of your worksite.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 7 to 33 t.
For example, on an excavator over 20 t, the weight is generally from 1 050 to 3 750 kg.
A vibratory driver fits medium and large class excavators.
It attaches to all couplers, via a mounting plate.
The exact class: we calculate it with you for your machine.

What the tool does

It drives sheet piles by vibration.
For example, on an excavator over 20 t: centrifugal force from 150 to 800 kN, frequency from 2 300 to 3 000 rpm.
The piles accepted, the centrifugal force, the frequency and the weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It connects to the excavator's hydraulics.
The working pressure is generally from 200 to 350 bar, depending on the size of the machine.
The flow, the pressures and the case drain to the tank: we calculate them with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Give us your excavator model, the section and the length of the sheet piles, and what you know about the ground.
Above all, tell us whether the wall will have to be taken out, and what is around the worksite.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Vibratory pile driver Principle — the same vibration, with a clamp that grips a pile or a post.
Use — it is the tool for series of identical piles: fencing, pontoon or solar structure.
  • Driving hammer Principle — a mass striking the head of the pile, through a driving cap.
Use — it drives stakes, posts and tubes into compact ground, with no way back.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The ground, which decides feasibility Vibration excels in sands, graded aggregates and silts.
In a stiff clay or on rock, the section refuses — and no amount of power makes up for that.
  • 02 — The section and the length of the sheet piles They govern the force needed and the headroom to be allowed.
A short shoring wall and a bank retaining wall do not call for the same machine.
  • 03 — The clamping system It has to accept the real shape of the section.
A poorly matched clamp deforms the head and makes the element unusable for withdrawal.
  • 04 — Temporary or permanent If the wall has to be pulled out, the choice is also made on the extraction, which is the most demanding movement.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The auxiliary line, its flow and its pressure The first knock-out criterion, to be checked continuously and not at peak.
  • The headroom above the driving point The section is presented vertically:
the tool plus sheet pile together far exceeds the height of the finished wall.
  • The weight carried at the real reach A wall is rarely driven at the foot of the machine.
The load chart is read at the working reach.
  • The immediate surroundings What is around, and at what distance:
this is the fact that can rule out the whole process.
