Scrap shear

Scrap shear fitted on the arm of an excavator, cutting through a steel beam on a deconstruction site, sparks and swarf
It cuts the metal already on the ground, to the length that fits in the skip.
Synthetic image.

The name designates a use more than a separate technology:
cutting metal already on the ground, and bringing it down to the length that fits in a skip.

Other names for this tool: metal shear, scrapyard shear, scrap cutter, sizing shear, sorting shear.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, on the ground, the shear cuts the fallen scrap to the length of the skip. On the right, the demolition shear, for its part, brings down the structure that is still standing. Computer-generated image.

Right: the demolition shear, for its part, brings down the structure that is still standing.
What sets it apart:
the cutting principle is identical — it is the work station that changes everything.
Computer-generated image.

A demolition shear brings down a frame at height;
a scrap shear picks up on the ground what has fallen and cuts it up.
The cutting principle is identical — two blades crossing — but the work is not:
here the passes are short, numerous, repeated all day long.

It is that repetition that makes the difference in use.
The number of blades, whether they can be turned round and the possibility of replacing them one by one weigh more heavily in the cost of a year than the capacity announced in the catalogue.

Let us be clear about the vocabulary: many salesmen use “scrap shear” and “demolition shear” for the same tool, and our own hydraulic shear page gives one as a synonym of the other.
The distinction is real in use, slight in a catalogue:
it is the tool's data sheet that settles it, never its name. See the hydraulic shear.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

The scrap shear fits excavators from 1,5 to 310 t, via a mounting plate, on all couplers.
On a mini-excavator from 2 to 5 t: a shear from 320 to 490 kg.
On an excavator from 5 to 10 t: from 320 to 850 kg.
On an excavator from 10 to 20 t: from 490 to 3 300 kg.
On an excavator over 20 t: from 990 to 8 400 kg.

What the tool does

This tool cuts scrap, with a weight of 300 to 21 000 kg depending on the size.
On four models recorded, its length is 1 240, 1 790, 2 410 or 5 425 mm.
The cutting blades and the sets of jaws can be exchanged, and the bolt-on teeth can be replaced without welding, to be checked with you.
Also available in a rotating version, through 360°.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs an auxiliary hydraulic circuit, at 250 to 380 bar depending on the size.
From 10 t, the flow ranges from 150 to 450 l/min.
On an excavator under 10 t, the flow: we calculate it with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Describe the metal you handle, the length you have to bring it down to and the rate of a day.
We will say whether a dedicated tool is justified.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Hydraulic shear Principle — the same cutting principle, with a force also applied to a standing structure.
Use — it brings down a steel frame, then is used for sorting and processing the steel.
  • Crocodile shear Principle — a jaw hinged at one end, which gives a wide opening for its size.
Use — it is judged by its useful opening, where the piece goes in, and the word also designates a workshop shear that is not an excavator attachment.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The nature of the metal handled Thin sheet, sections, cable, reinforcing bars:
they do not wear the blades in the same way.
  • 02 — The length aimed at when cutting up It is what fixes the number of cuts, and so the real wear.
  • 03 — The rotation On a heap, the piece is never in line.
Without rotation, it is the machine that moves at every cut.
  • 04 — The blades Bolt-on, reversible, replaceable separately:
that is where the cost of use lies.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The pressure available, before the flow A shear works by force, not by speed.
  • The work station Picking up in a heap, cutting up on a yard, or cutting at height:
the loading is not the same.
  • The weight at the end of the arm Shears are among the heaviest tools at equal capacity.
  • The availability of the blades It is checked before buying, not at the first replacement.
