Directional drilling rig
Taking a service under a road, a driveway or a wall without opening them.
You go in on one
side, you come out on the other, and between the two nothing has moved.
Other names for this tool: directional drilling, horizontal drilling, horizontal drilling rig, directional drill head, underpinning drill, directional boring.

What it is for
Right: a trench means cutting, digging out, backfilling and reinstating the carriageway.
What sets it apart:
what you are buying is not opening the ground — and the path can be curved.
Computer-generated image.
A drill head advances underground, guided, and pulls behind it the duct or
the pipe to be laid.
The path can be curved:
you go down, you pass under
the obstacle, you come back up.
Values recorded on one model give a force of 400 to
6,000 kg and a radius of curvature of 2 to 6 m.
These
figures describe a range, not one machine:
they indicate the order of magnitude
of the field covered.
What you are buying is not opening the ground. Under a road,
the trench requires cutting, reinstatement, signing and often a
highway permit.
Under a driveway or a lawn, it requires making
good.
Directional drilling removes all of that — and that is where the sum is done,
not on the price of the tool.

What the tool does
As a guide: a force of 400 to 6 000 kg and a radius of 2 to 6 m.
The torque, the rotation speed and the weight of the drilling rig: we calculate them with you for your machine.
What is needed on the hydraulic side
It works hydraulically.
The circuit, the flow, the pressure and the case drain to the tank: we calculate them with you for your machine.
Figures taken from our models on the market.
Your study sets the exact value for your machine.
Don't have these figures?
A photo of the machine is enough to start.
Have your machine checked.
Give us your excavator model, the length to be crossed, what you are putting through and
under what.
Above all, tell us what you know about the ground:
it is what decides whether
directional drilling is the right answer.
- Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
- The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
- The coupler in place Its system and its class.
- The work The use, and the material.
Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

What determines the choice
-
01 — The length to be crossed
It is what governs the force needed.
Crossing a four-metre driveway and passing under a main road do not call for the same equipment. -
02 — The permissible radius of curvature
It decides the depth that can be reached over a given distance.
A wide radius means entering far from the obstacle; a tight radius allows you to go down quickly, at the cost of greater stress on the rod. -
03 — The nature of the ground, which is the real judge
Directional drilling likes homogeneous ground.
Made ground, boulders and old masonry deflect the head — and a deflected head comes out where it was not meant to. - 04 — The diameter of what is being pulled An electrical duct, a watering pipe and a sewer pipe do not call for the same reaming nor the same pulling force.
Drilling rig or trencher? The
trencher opens and closes again:
it is faster
and far cheaper in open ground.
The drilling rig is justified only
when opening the ground is forbidden, too long or too costly.
On the
same worksite, the two are often used together:
the trench up to the road, the
drilling under the road.
What is checked before ordering
- The auxiliary line, its flow and its pressure Drilling calls for force as much as for flow. See the 7 criteria.
-
The existing utilities along the route
This is the most important check, and it is a legal requirement.
A blind bore under a road is not a risk taken:
it is a fault. -
The entry and exit points
Room is needed on both sides, and access for the machine.
That is checked on the ground, not on a plan. -
The interface
Coupler type and size, or pin dimensions.
The tool is supplied with the matching plate — see the couplers.
