Asphalt disc
A trench begins with a cut.
The disc opens the asphalt on the line, without
breaking it up around — and it is that cut which decides the quality of the reinstatement,
months later.
Other names for this tool: excavator floor saw, asphalt cutter, asphalt saw, hydraulic diamond disc, cutting disc, road saw.

What it is for
Right: the same excavator sets the disc down and opens the trench with the bucket.
What sets it apart:
the cut is clean and vertical — the material left in place will hold.
Computer-generated image.
A hydraulically driven diamond disc goes down into the carriageway and follows the
line.
The cut is clean and vertical:
the material left in place is neither
cracked nor lifted, and the edge will hold.
Fitted on the excavator that is going to open the trench, it does away with one machine and one gang
movement:
the same machine cuts, then takes the disc off and picks up the bucket.
On a
short job on a road in use, it is the time the carriageway is occupied
that goes down — and that is often what is charged for.
A clean cut is not a refinement. Asphalt torn out with a
bucket leaves irregular edges that are already cracked; the reinstatement lifts
at those edges, and the job comes back.
What the disc protects is the
guarantee of the reinstatement, not the tidiness of the site.
On which machine?
On an excavator from 5 to 10 t or from 10 to 20 t: a disc from 56 to 110 kg.
It fits all quick couplers, via a mounting plate, or directly on the pins.
What the tool does
It is a road-works tool, for working asphalt.
Its width ranges from 120 to 140 mm.
Its length ranges from 420 to 540 mm, to be checked with you.
What is needed on the hydraulic side
It needs a hydraulic circuit with continuous function.
The flow and pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.
Figures taken from 2 models on the market.
Your study sets the exact value for your machine.
Have your machine checked.
Give us your excavator model, the nature and thickness of the carriageway, and the
length to be cut.
Tell us whether you cut dry or with watering:
that changes
the disc as much as the organisation of the job.
- Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
- The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
- The coupler in place Its system and its class.
- The work The use, and the material.
Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

What determines the choice
-
01 — The cutting depth
It must cover the whole thickness of the structure to be cut through, not only
the wearing course.
A cut that stops too high lets the base course tear away, and the benefit of the cut disappears. -
02 — The disc, chosen on the material
Asphalt, concrete, reinforced concrete and stone call for neither the same
segmentation nor the same bond.
A concrete disc in asphalt clogs; an asphalt disc in reinforced concrete wears out in a few metres. -
03 — The flow available, continuously
The disc must keep its speed in the pass.
A flow that is only just enough makes it slow down on contact, it rubs instead of cutting, and it wears without advancing. -
04 — Dry or with watering
Water cools the disc, lengthens its life and damps down the dust.
On the other hand it requires a supply and produces slurry to be dealt with.
The choice is made on the site:
a town centre and an occupied building lean clearly towards water.
Disc or cutter? The disc draws a line:
it opens an
outline.
The cutter removes material
over a surface.
They are not two ways of doing the same thing, and many
road jobs use both in succession.
What is checked before ordering
- The auxiliary line and its flow First eliminating criterion, to be checked continuously and not at peak. See the 7 criteria.
-
The real structure of the carriageway
The thicknesses and nature of the layers.
It is what determines both the depth needed and the disc to be fitted — and it is information that is obtained beforehand, not at the moment of cutting. -
The water, if you cut wet
Where it comes from, and where the slurry goes.
That is prepared for:
on a road, discharge is not free. -
The buried services
A cut goes down into the carriageway.
What passes underneath comes under the works declaration and the prior survey, not under the choice of tool — but it governs the depth you can allow yourself. -
The interface
Coupler type and size, or pin dimensions.
The tool is supplied with the matching plate — see the couplers.
