Sorting and gripping

Multi-tine grapple

Grapple with two jaws fitted with interlocking tines, holding rubble and timber, on a demolition site
The tines interlock without closing a volume:
the coarse is held, the fine passes between the tines.
Synthetic image.

Two jaws fitted with tines that interlock.
What is bulky is held:
what is fine passes between the tines, and that is intended.

Other names for this tool: clawed grapple, tined clamshell grapple, waste grapple, handling grapple.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the interlocking tines bite into a heap of tangled branches and carry it off in one piece. On the right, with fine bulk material, the chips and soil escape between the tines, between the heap and the skip. Computer-generated image.

A grapple with curved tines biting into a tangled heap of timber and scrap, the material sticking out between the tines.
The tines interlock, they do not close a volume:
that is what makes it possible to bite into what catches.
Synthetic image.

The tines interlock instead of closing a volume.
The grip bites into a tangled heap — branches, bulky waste, mixed rubble — instead of sliding over it.
The fines fall during the transfer, which avoids moving fill for nothing.

It is the tool for sorting platforms, civic amenity sites and roadside clearances.
It works by volume, not by precision:
it is asked to empty a heap fast, not to lay a piece at an exact place.

It does not hold fine bulk. A grip of soil, chippings or fine rubble empties partly between the tines, onto the ground, between the heap and the skip.
If that is your dominant material, it is a closed volume that you need. See the orange-peel grapple.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 6 to 30 t.
For example, on a 10 to 20 t excavator, the weight is generally from 400 to 980 kg.
It is recorded with an OilQuick or S (symmetrical) coupler, compatible with a tiltrotator or tilting coupler, to be checked with you.

What the tool does

Its rotation is hydraulic.
For example, on a 10 to 20 t excavator: maximum opening from 1 382 to 1 552 mm, width from 840 to 1 440 mm.
A version that rotates through 360° is also available, to be checked with you.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs two hydraulic circuits, one for opening, the other for rotation, with their control in the cab.
It generally needs from 50 to 150 l/min, depending on the size of the machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Describe the heap you pick up and what you do with it:
a skip, a windrow, sorting on the ground.
Tell us whether the machine already has a rotator.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Orange peel grab Principle — shells that close into a sphere and enclose what they pick up.
Use — it holds fine loose material and scrap, from the heap to the skip, without losing anything on the way.
  • Four-tine multi-purpose grab Principle — tines that clamp against a fixed part, with the force concentrated on the piece.
Use — it grips a flat, long or isolated piece, in selective demolition or building strip-out.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The number and spacing of the tines The spacing decides what stays inside and what falls.
  • 02 — The maximum opening It is chosen on the largest piece to be gripped, not on the average of the heap.
  • 03 — The rotation Without it, you present the machine to the load instead of presenting the tool to the load.
  • 04 — The strength of the tines A tine bent by a curling force is not straightened twice.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The nature of the heap Homogeneous or mixed, dry or laden with soil.
  • The driver's real movement Gripping and transferring, or gripping and untangling:
it is not the same loading.
  • The hydraulic circuits and their control A line with no control in the cab is of no use.
  • The interface Coupler designation, or pin dimensions.
