Weed cutter

Weed cutter immersed in a watercourse: a horizontal cutter bar carried at the end of the arm works below the surface, and the cut vegetation floats around it, between two grassed banks.
It cuts the aquatic vegetation:
it does not take it out.
Synthetic image.

A cutter bar passed under the water, in a ditch or a pond.

it does not take it out.

Other names for this tool: weed-cutting bar, aquatic mower, weed-cutting tool, submerged cutter bar.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the weed cutter severs the vegetation flush with the bed of a water-filled ditch, without stirring up the silt. On the right, the weed-cutting bucket, despite its name, cuts nothing and lifts out of the water what has been mown. Computer-generated image.

A cutter bar cutting the vegetation close to the bottom of a ditch under water, the cut stems floating at the surface and the muddy water stirred up behind the tool.
It cuts close to the bottom, not at the surface:
that is what restores the flow, and not only the appearance.
Synthetic image.

Vegetation that establishes itself in a ditch, a mill race or a pond ends up hindering the flow.
The weed cutter cuts it close to the bottom or at the height chosen, without stirring up the silt and without re-digging the profile:
it is cutting work, not cleaning out.

It therefore comes first in a two-stage chain.
What it cuts stays in the water and has to be taken out afterwards, failing which the material settles and the problem comes back sooner.
The second tool is a slotted bucket, which gathers and lets the water escape.

Not to be confused with the weed-cutting bucket, despite the name. The weed cutter cuts;
the weed-cutting bucket, for its part, cuts nothing:
it gathers what has been cut and drains it as it comes up.
Many jobs call for both, in that order. See the weed-cutting bucket.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 1 to 24 t.
For example, on a 5 to 10 t excavator, the weight is generally from 130 to 430 kg.
It fits all machine classes, via a mounting plate on all couplers.
The right class and the exact coupler: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What the tool does

It is used for green space maintenance.
For example, on a 5 to 10 t excavator: width from 1 000 to 4 000 mm.
The maximum cutting diameter, the working width and its weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs a hydraulic circuit with continuous function.
The flow and the pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Describe the ditch or the pond:
length, depth, access to the bank, type of vegetation.
Tell us also who takes the cut material out, and where it goes.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Weed-cutting bucket Principle — a perforated bucket that cuts nothing, the water draining away as it comes up.
Use — it comes second, to remove what has been cut and the ditch deposits.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The cutting width, chosen on the ditch A bar wider than the ditch works at an angle and damages the banks.
  • 02 — The cutting height Cutting close to the bottom and cutting at mid-height do not have the same effects on the regrowth.
The client often has a requirement on that point.
  • 03 — Resistance to corrosion A tool that spends its life in water is not maintained like an earthmoving tool.
  • 04 — The reach from the bank Weed cutting is rarely done from the axis of the watercourse:
it is the reach available that governs the size of the machine.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The length and the depth of water Measured on the spot, with the real condition of the bank.
  • What becomes of the material cut It has to be taken out, and it has to go somewhere:
that point is settled before, not after.
  • The bearing capacity of the bank It is what decides the machine, often before the tool.
  • The working window Aquatic environments are subject to local prescriptions and specifications:
we do not settle them for you, they are settled with the client.
