Digging and ditching

Tilting ditching bucket

On the left, the cylinder tilts the bucket, the slope is followed without moving the machine. On the right, without tilt, the excavator has to reposition and marks the finished bank. Computer-generated image.

It tilts hydraulically, so the slope is set at the tool.
The machine no longer moves to correct half a degree.

Other names for this tool: hydraulic tilting bucket, tilting ditch bucket, tiltable bucket.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the cylinder tilts the bucket, the slope is followed without moving the machine. On the right, without tilt, the excavator has to reposition and marks the finished bank. Computer-generated image.

Right: without tilt, the excavator has to reposition and marks the finished bank.
What sets it apart:
the bucket is at an angle, the machine is not — every repositioning avoided is time gained.

It is a grading bucket to which a tilt ram has been added.
The driver adjusts the slope continuously, from the cab, without repositioning the tracks.

On a ditch along a road, an embankment slope or a platform to be finished, every repositioning avoided is time gained and one less mark on ground that is already finished.

It calls for a double-acting hydraulic line to be available. Many small machines do not have one, or have only one, already taken.
That is the point to check before anything else. See the auxiliary line.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 1,4 to 40 t.
For example, on a 10 to 20 t excavator, the weight is generally from 253 to 1 223 kg.
It attaches to all quick couplers via a mounting plate, or directly on the pins.

What the tool does

It is used for digging and ditching.
For example, for a width of 1 400 mm: capacity from 195 to 1 411 l, weight from 138 to 1 446 kg.
A hydraulic cylinder lets it tilt.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs one double-acting hydraulic line at the end of the dipper arm, with its control in the cab.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Send us a photograph of the end of the dipper arm and tell us how many tools would gain from tilting.
If the answer is “several”, it is perhaps the coupler you should look at.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Tilting bucket Principle — the same tilt cylinder, fitted between the mounting plate and a bucket body of your choice: digging, stripping or ditching.
Use — it is chosen by the bucket to be tilted, not only by the ditch or the bank to be finished.
Wide, smooth ditching bucket, tilted by its ram to follow the slope of a ditch along a country road
The bucket is at an angle, the machine is not. It is the tilt ram that follows the slope — the tracks have not moved, and the road stays clear.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The hydraulic line available It decides feasibility, not the tonnage.
  • 02 — Tilting bucket or tilting coupler One tilts that bucket;
    the other tilts every tool.
The calculation is made on the number of tools concerned.
  • 03 — The useful amount of tilt It relates to the slopes you actually make.
  • 04 — The weight and height added The ram and its frame are added at the end of the arm.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The number of lines at the end of the dipper arm With a photograph to back it up.
  • The flow and the pressure available At the outlet, not at the pump.
  • The control in the cab A line with no control is of no use.
  • The load chart with the whole fitted Bucket full, arm extended.
