Road sweeper

Wide roller of stiff bristles mounted on a mini-excavator arm, sweeping chippings on a village road, fine dust raised close to the ground
The roller brings the chippings along in front of it; without a hopper, it only moves them.
Synthetic image.

A roller of bristles that turns and sweeps ahead of it.
With a hopper, it no longer pushes:
it collects, and what is swept up leaves with the tool.

Other names for this tool: sweeping brush, rotary broom, bucket broom, collector sweeper, site brush.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, with a hopper, the sweeper takes away the grit in a single pass. On the right, without a hopper, the brush leaves a windrow of grit to pick up. Computer-generated image.

Right: without a hopper, the brush leaves a windrow of grit to pick up.
What sets it apart:
without a hopper it moves the material, with a hopper it takes it away.
Computer-generated image.

The roller turns continuously and moves the fine material:
chippings, deposited soil, spreading sand, site debris.
Without a hopper, it pushes the material to one side and leaves it in a windrow, which then has to be picked up.

With a hopper, the tool holds what it sweeps and empties into a skip:
one operation instead of two, and a road left clean in a single pass. It is the presence or absence of a hopper that makes the difference on site, far more than the diameter of the roller.

Not to be confused with the weed-control brush. That one is an aggressive brush that works the joint and the kerb to tear out vegetation;
the sweeper moves loose material over a surface.
The bristles are not the same, and one does not do the other's work. See the weed-control brush.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

On a mini-excavator from 2 to 5 t: a sweeper from 180 to 250 kg.
On an excavator from 5 to 10 t: from 180 to 320 kg.
On an excavator from 10 to 20 t: from 280 to 320 kg.
For a micro-excavator or an excavator over 20 t, the weight: we calculate it with you for your machine.
The sweeper fits all quick couplers, via a mounting plate.

What the tool does

This road sweeper works over a width of 1 000 to 2 100 mm.
The common widths are 1 000, 1 200, 1 400, 1 600, 1 800 and 2 100 mm.
Its brush is 600 mm in diameter, to be checked with you.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs an auxiliary hydraulic circuit with continuous flow.
The models recorded need 60 l/min at 140 bar.

Figures taken from 16 models on the market.
Your study sets the exact value for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Tell us the surface to be swept, the surfacing and what you are picking up:
chippings, soil, spreading sand.
State whether the material has to be taken away or only put into a windrow.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — With or without a hopper Pushing into a windrow or picking up:
this is the first question, and it decides the rest.
  • 02 — The nature of the bristles Steel attacks packed material but marks a soft surfacing;
nylon respects the surface and calls for more passes.
It is the ground that decides.
  • 03 — The width, chosen on the narrowest passage Not on the widest.
A sweeper that does not fit through the access forces you to go back over it by hand.
  • 04 — Water spray Sweeping dry raises dust.
On an occupied site or in town, spraying stops being a comfort.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The surfacing to be treated Asphalt, paving, concrete, slabs, sand joints or cement joints:
the choice of bristles follows directly from it.
  • The flow available continuously The roller turns throughout the operation, not in bursts.
  • Flying material and the exclusion zone A rotary brush throws back chippings and debris.
Near vehicles or shop windows, the exclusion zone is kept.
  • The wear of the bristles The brush gets shorter with every working hour:
replacing it weighs on the season more than the price of the tool.
