Digging and ditching

Grading beam

On the left, drawn across the bedding layer, the beam smooths out the dips and bumps. On the right, the grading blade, for its part, moves material to bring the surface back to level. Computer-generated image.

A screed, drawn at the end of the dipper arm.
It pushes no material:
it finishes a layer already graded, over its whole width, in a single pass.

Other names for this tool: levelling straightedge, grading bar, levelling beam, drag straightedge.

01 Use

What it is for

What sets it apart:
it is the action of a mason's straightedge, on the scale of a platform.
Computer-generated image.

The action is that of a mason's straightedge, on the scale of a platform:
you pull, the bar wipes out the hollows and the humps, and the surface takes on a flatness the bucket does not give.

It is justified on formation levels, bedding layers, driveways and any surface that will receive a covering.
It is a passive tool:
no hydraulics, no control, a mounting and a setting.

It does not replace a grading blade. The blade moves material and makes up a difference in level;
the bar only smooths what is already at the right level.
Used in place of the other, it leaves waves. See the grading blades.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

A grading beam fits machines from about 0,6 to 30 t.
It attaches to all couplers, via a mounting plate.

What the tool does

It is used for levelling, in earthmoving work.
Its weight: we calculate it with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

A passive tool, it needs no hydraulic connection.

Figures taken from our models on the market.
Your study sets the exact value for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Give us the surface to be finished, the layer concerned and the tolerance required.
Tell us too whether your machine already carries a levelling guidance system.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Steel levelling bar pulled on the end of the dipper arm over a sand platform, the surface levelled behind it and still uneven in front
The difference can be read in a single picture: levelled behind, raw in front.
The bar does not move material, it wipes out what the bucket left.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The width It decides the number of passes, and therefore the joins visible on the finished surface.
  • 02 — The stiffness A bar that bends reproduces the defect instead of wiping it out.
  • 03 — The method of towing Rigid or articulated draw:
the behaviour on curves is not the same.
  • 04 — Pairing with machine guidance Driving the bar by a guidance system gives a level, and not only a flatness.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The flatness tolerance required It comes from the contract, not from habit.
  • The nature of the layer to be finished Sand, graded aggregate, topsoil:
they do not smooth in the same way.
  • The presence of a guidance system on the machine It changes what the tool can guarantee.
  • The interface Coupler designation or pin dimensions.
