Handling and lifting

Silage and unloading fork

A telehandler takes a block of grass silage from the face of a bunker silo with a fork with cutting blade; the cut wall stays smooth and vertical, nobody is visible.
The block comes out in one piece, the face stays smooth.
Synthetic image.

Long tines, an arm or a blade.
They push the grass up onto the silo,
then take up the silage and cut the face clean.

Other names for this tool: silo fork, silage unloading fork, silage unloading arm, silage cutter, fork with cutting blade, mounted silage unloader.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the blade slices the block and leaves a smooth, vertical silage face. On the right, torn out without cutting, the face rips and lets the air in. Computer-generated image.

Left: the blade slices the block and leaves a smooth, vertical silage face.
Right: torn out without cutting, the face rips and lets the air in.
What sets it apart:
the tines enter the forage without crushing it, the blade slices it and leaves a smooth face.

The silage fork carries a row of long tines in front of a backrest: mounted on the tractor or the loader, it pushes the grass up onto the silo during harvest.
Depending on the model, it folds for the road, takes an extension for maize, side plates, lighting or tines on the sides.

For unloading, a long arm fitted with tines reaches for the forage at the top of the silo, and a milling roller can take the place of the tines.
The fork with cutting blade slices a block in a single movement: the face stays smooth, less air gets in and the silage heats less.

A block of silage raised high at the end of a long arm is a lever arm. The stability of the machine is judged with the fork full and raised, not empty.
The width and the permissible load depend on the model, not on a generic figure.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

A silage fork fits a farm loader, a loader, a telehandler or a tractor, not an excavator.
Depending on the model, it hitches to a Euro hitch or the three-point linkage.
The tractor power, the linkage category and the lifting capacity: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What the tool does

It is used for silage handling and unloading.
Its working width and its weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

Depending on the model, it needs no drive, or hydraulics for cutting, folding or the milling roller.
The number of spool valves and the third function on the loader: we calculate them with you for your machine.

Your study sets the exact value for your machine.

Don't have these figures?
A photo of the machine is enough to start.

03 Your study

Have your equipment checked.

Describe the silo, the forage and the machine that will carry the fork.
Specify whether it is for building the silo or unloading it.

What we need to answer you
  • On a tractor Its power in hp, and the power take-off speed: 540 or 1000 rpm.
  • The tractor hitch The three-point linkage category, and the spool valves available.
  • On a loader Its hitch, Euro or another, and its lifting capacity.
  • The 3rd function Present or not.
  • The work The use.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — Building the silo or unloading it Tine fork to push at harvest, arm or blade to take up at feeding:
the moment of the work decides.
  • 02 — The forage Grass, maize, round bales to be cut:
an extension holds back maize, a blade slices long grass without tearing it.
  • 03 — The height of the silo Low face or high silo:
an unloading arm extends the reach of the machine and avoids undercutting the foot of the face.
  • 04 — The machine and the hitch Front or rear linkage, Euro hitch, loader, wheel loader, telehandler:
the fork is chosen with the machine that carries it, full.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The capacity of the machine It is checked with the fork full of the heaviest silage, raised to the height of the silo, not empty.
  • The hydraulics None, or one double-acting spool valve for cutting, folding or the roller:
we check that the machine controls each movement.
  • The hitch Loader or telehandler coupler, Euro hitch, linkage:
we check that the coupling is that of the machine.
  • Driving on the road Fork folded, tines protected, lighting:
we check what the tool allows before leaving the yard.
