Sorting and gripping

Log grab

A grab squeezed on a single log, above an aligned stack of timber, in a forest; the rotator is visible above the squeezing arms.
It grips the piece, not the armful:
a log held firmly is laid where you want it.

It grips the piece, not the armful.
A log held firmly is laid where you want it:
that is all that is asked of it.

Other names for this tool: timber grab, log clamp, trunk grab, extraction grab.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the grab clamps a single log and lays it in line on the stack. On the right, the forestry grapple picks up an armful of logs and sets them down in a heap. Computer-generated image.

Left: the grab clamps a single log and lays it in line on the stack.
Right: the forestry grapple picks up an armful of logs and sets them down in a heap.
What sets it apart:
it squeezes the piece and not the armful — you choose it when the log has to be laid, not merely moved.
Computer-generated image.

The squeezing is concentrated on one piece.
The log does not turn in the tool during the laying, which makes it possible to align, to stack cleanly and to load a lorry without going back over the heap.
It is precision work, not volume work.

The names overlap widely with those of the forestry grapple, and depending on the region the same tool carries both names.
The useful question is therefore not the word:
it is knowing whether you take one piece at a time or an armful.

Handling timber with an excavator is load handling. The stability, the working area and the presence of people on the ground count as much as the tool chosen.
Those rules are not ours, and they cannot be got round:
they are part of the sizing. See the load cell and load limiter.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

On a mini-excavator from 2 to 5 t: a grab from 95 to 120 kg.
On an excavator from 5 to 10 t: from 95 to 540 kg.
On an excavator from 10 to 20 t: from 240 to 800 kg.
The grab fits all couplers, via a mounting plate.
Some models also fit a farm loader, a telehandler or a compact loader, to be checked with you.

What the tool does

This grab is used to grip and sort logs.
Its two movements are opening and rotation.
Its weight ranges from 95 to 800 kg depending on the model.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs two hydraulic circuits, one for opening, the other for rotation.
The recorded pressure ranges from 200 to 280 bar depending on the excavator class.
The flow: we calculate it with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Tell us what you load, where, and at what rate.
If you are hesitating between a grab and a grapple, describe the movement:
one piece or an armful, the answer is there.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — One piece or an armful It is the only question that really separates this tool from the forestry grapple.
  • 02 — The squeezing force A log that slips during the rotation is the start of an accident.
  • 03 — The rotation Aligning timber without a rotator means moving the machine for every piece.
  • 04 — The wear of the jaw tips They bite the bark, so they wear, so they have to be replaced.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The diameter of the timber handled And above all how variable it is from one piece to another.
  • The height and distance of laying They fix the reach, so the load chart.
  • The hydraulic circuits Squeezing and rotation, plus the control in the cab.
  • The organisation on the ground Who moves about while the load is in the air.
