Finishing roller
it tightens it and closes it.
Synthetic image.
A cylinder carried at the end of the arm, walked over a surface already graded.
It does not correct the shape:
it tightens it and closes it.
Other names for this tool: finishing roller, carried roller, smooth compaction cylinder, verge roller.

What it is for
Right: the self-propelled roller cannot get close to the edge of the ditch on the slope.
What sets it apart:
it comes after the levelling, on a surface already in shape.
Computer-generated image.
The roller is passed over the surface after the levelling:
it closes up the tool marks, tightens the fine materials and gives an even appearance.
On a verge, a berm, a haul road or a closed trench, it is the pass that makes the difference between finished work and work to be done again.
Carried by the excavator, it reaches what a self-propelled roller cannot approach:
a ditch edge, a cross-fall, a narrow strip between a structure and a road in service, the back of a safety barrier.
It is not an asphalt paver, and it is not a trench-bottom compactor. It finishes a surface, it does not build bearing capacity.
For trench backfill in layers, it is the vibrating plate or the compaction wheel that is needed. See the vibrating plate.
On which machine?
It fits machines of all classes, via a mounting plate on any coupler.
The suitable class and the exact coupler: we calculate them with you for your machine.
What the tool does
It is used for road works.
It also comes in a vibrating version.
The effective width of the roller and its weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.
What is needed on the hydraulic side
It needs no hydraulic connection, except in the vibrating version.
For this version, the flow and pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.
Your study sets the exact value for your machine.
Don't have these figures?
A photo of the machine is enough to start.
Have your machine checked.
Describe the surface to be finished:
nature, width, length, and what borders it.
Tell us whether a compaction check is expected, because that changes the answer completely.
- Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
- The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
- The coupler in place Its system and its class.
- The work The use, and the material.
Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

What determines the choice
-
01 — The result aimed at, appearance or bearing capacity
Closing a surface and compacting a layer are two different objectives.
The roller answers the first. -
02 — Smooth or vibrating
The smooth one closes without energy;
the vibrating one tightens more, but it calls for a hydraulic line and it transmits vibration to the machine. - 03 — The width, chosen on the strip to be treated A width greater than the strip makes the roller work overhanging and marks the edge.
-
04 — The immediate surroundings
Recent buried structures, kerbs, shallow utilities:
they limit the energy that can be applied.
What is checked before ordering
- The nature of the materials at the surface A fine soil and a crushed graded aggregate do not close up in the same way.
- The check expected by the client If there is a compaction check, it is no longer a question of finishing.
-
The weight at the end of the arm
The roller is passed with the arm extended, often on a cross-fall:
the load chart is read at the maximum reach. -
The hydraulic line, in the vibrating version
A dedicated line is necessary;
a smooth version calls for none.
