MBI system

Quick coupler seen at three-quarters, off the machine
A quick coupler unit, off the machine:
the hook that takes the pin, the locks and their position indicator.
The image shows the principle common to all standards, not one standard in particular.
Illustration based on an existing product.

A coupler standard met with above all on demolition tools.
It is read off the machine, like all the others.

Other names for this tool: MBI coupler, MBI quick coupler, MBI-type quick coupler.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, under a demolition grab, the coupler with sound locks absorbs twisting and shocks. On the right, a worn coupler, with visible play, under a heavy tool. Computer-generated image.

Left: under a demolition grab, the coupler with sound locks absorbs twisting and shocks.
Right: a worn coupler, with visible play, under a heavy tool.
What sets it apart:
it is met with above all under heavy tools, where the condition of the locks matters as much as compatibility.
Computer-generated image.

The principle is that of all standards:
an interface at the end of the dipper arm, one mounting plate per tool, and changing without knocking out a pin.

What deserves to be said has to do with what is hitched to it.
Under a grab or a mulcher, the force does not come down only vertically:
it works in torsion and in shock, cycle after cycle.
The condition of the locks and the play in the coupler weigh there as much as geometric compatibility.

We publish no dimension and no tonnage range for this standard. We hold none that we can show.
And on a coupler that carries heavy tools, an approximate figure would not be an approximation:
it would be taking a risk on the customer's behalf.
The check is made on your machine, in the study. See why we leave boxes empty.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 5 to 70 t.
For example, on an excavator over 20 t, the weight is generally from 280 to 1 250 kg.
The MBI system is a proprietary coupler standard.
The excavator class, the coupler on the excavator side and the control in the cab: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What the tool does

Its role: to connect and adapt your tools.
The type of locking, the pin centres, the pin diameter, the width and the weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

Depending on the version, locking is mechanical or hydraulic.
The locking flow and pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Send us two photographs of the end of the dipper arm, the model of your machine, and tell us what tool you intend to hitch to it.
It is that last point that often changes the answer.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The coupler actually fitted, read on the machine It is read at the end of the dipper arm.
No standard's name given from memory replaces that reading.
  • 02 — The tool you intend to hitch to it A bucket and a demolition grab do not load a coupler in the same way.
It is the most demanding tool in the fleet that must decide, not the most common.
  • 03 — The version, mechanical or hydraulic The hydraulic one locks from the cab and assumes a dedicated line.
On a heavy tool, the locking indicator is not a comfort.
  • 04 — The condition of what is there A tired coupler is replaced before a new tool is hitched to it, never after.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • Two photographs of the end of the dipper arm One from the side, one from the front.
They are almost always enough to identify the interface.
  • The play in the coupler, locks closed Play that can be heard at work is play that gets worse.
  • The locking indicator It must return to position, cleanly, without being helped.
  • The wear of the pins and their housings A worn pin damages its housing, and a damaged housing is not replaced the way a pin is.
  • The weight of the tool in view, coupler included It is compared with the capacities of the machine.
We check it in the study rather than leave you to estimate it.
