Coupling and adapting

Symmetrical type S coupler

The symmetrical standard of Swedish origin, often called “Volvo type”.
Sizes S30 to S90:
the number follows the class of the machine.

Other names for this tool: S type, S coupler, symmetrical standard, S Nordic, “Volvo type”.

What it is for

What sets it apart:
the symmetry is not for looks — it allows the tool to be picked up the other way round, without dismantling it.

The coupler comes down onto the bucket lying on the ground, locks it and lifts it without any dismantling.
Synthetic video.

Its symmetrical geometry allows the tool to be presented both ways round:
a bucket can work in the backacter position or reversed without dismantling.
That explains part of its spread.

It is not patented.
Any bucket maker can produce a mounting plate to this format, and many do:
that is why it is met with under very different makes, with the same designation.

The size ranges deliberately overlap. The S45 and the S50 cover the same machine class:
the choice between the two is made on the carrier and on the equipment already in place, never on the tonnage alone. See the sizes by machine.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

A type S coupler exists for all excavator classes, depending on the size.
Our records cover excavators from 1,6 to 10 t.

What the tool does

Coupling and adapting your tools: that is its job.
Its weight: we calculate it with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

Depending on the version, locking is mechanical, or hydraulic with a control in the cab.
For the hydraulic version, the flow and the pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Send us a photograph of the end of the dipper arm:
the designation is most often engraved there.
With the machine model, that is enough to settle it.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Symmetrical quick coupler seen from the front at the end of the dipper arm, identical geometry on both sides, greased steel at the joints
The symmetry is not for looks: it allows the tool to be picked up the other way round, a bucket in the ditching position as well as in the digging position.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The size, read on the coupler The designation is generally engraved or painted.
It is the surest reading, before any calculation from the tonnage.
  • 02 — Mechanical or hydraulic The standard describes the geometry, not the locking method.
Both exist in the same size.
  • 03 — The fleet already equipped An S mounting plate does not fit on a coupler of another standard.
    That is not an obstacle:
it is the tool's mounting plate that adapts.
  • 04 — The maker of the mounting plate The standard being open, the quality of manufacture varies.
The thickness of the plate and the way the forces are taken are not the same everywhere.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The exact designation S30, S40, S45, S50, S60, S70, S80 or S90 — read off the coupler, not deduced.
  • The version, mechanical or hydraulic It changes what the machine has to supply.
  • The standard of the tools already in service It governs the standard of the mounting plate to be fitted on the new tool.
  • The tonnage and model of the machine They confirm the reading, or contradict it — in which case it is the reading that wins.
