Pruning bar

Pruning saw trimmer fitted on the arm of an excavator: a vertical bar carrying five saw discs in line, trimming a row of trees along a country road, chips and branches falling
Five discs in line on a bar:
the hedge is trimmed in a single pass, and the operator stays in the cab.
Synthetic image.

Cutting at height without a platform and without a climber, from the arm of the machine.
The name covers several tools:
it is the work aimed at that separates them.

Other names for this tool: pruning pole, cutter bar on an excavator, arm-mounted pruner, pruning head.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the bar carries the cut up to the branch, the driver stays in the cab. On the right, without it, someone has to go up to the branch in a platform. Computer-generated image.

Left: the bar carries the cut up to the branch, the driver stays in the cab.
Right: without it, someone has to go up to the branch in a platform.
What sets it apart:
it carries the cutting element up to the branch, instead of carrying a person up to it.
Computer-generated image.

The principle is constant:
carrying a cutting element up to the branch instead of carrying a person up to it.
The operator stays in the cab, the cut is made at a distance, and exposure to the risk of falling disappears from the job.

What changes from one tool to another is the cut itself.
“Pruning bar” does not designate the same equipment from one catalogue to another: some mean a chain cutter bar, others a row of circular saws, others again a shear blade.
We do not settle it for you:
describe the work, we will name the tool.

The branches fall, and they fall before you have finished cutting. The area under the cut is kept clear — carriageway, pavement, parking, overhead line.
It is the point that organises the job, even more than the choice of tool.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

On a machine from 1,5 to 8 t: the saw version, from 70 to 80 kg, to be checked with you.
On a machine from 1,4 to 11 t: the saw-carrier bar version, from 50 to 150 kg, to be checked with you.
On a tractor from 70 to 80 hp: the tractor version, from 250 to 325 kg, to be checked with you.
The bar attaches by a central hitch.

What the tool does

The saw version carries a 550 or 750 mm blade, which cuts up to 15 or 25 cm in diameter.
The saw-carrier bar cuts over a length of 150 to 230 cm, up to 4 or 7 cm in diameter.
Optional: a 1 m extension, fixed or adjustable, and a 360° angle gearbox.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs a hydraulic circuit with continuous function.
The flow ranges from 20 to 80 l/min depending on the motor, for a pressure of 190 bar, to be checked with you.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Describe what you have to cut, at what height, and what is underneath.
Above all, tell us whether the tree is kept or felled:
the cut sought is not the same.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Circular-saw hedge trimmer Principle — several circular saws aligned on a bar, turning in the same plane.
Use — it trims the whole face of a hedge or a row of trees in a single pass.
  • Circular pruning saw Principle — a single hydraulically driven disc that cuts cleanly.
Use — it cuts one branch at a time, precisely, and lets it fall within a controlled area on the ground.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The result expected on the tree A trimmed hedge plane, a branch laid down, clearing an envelope:
those are three jobs, so three tools.
  • 02 — The height to be reached It decides the machine, and sometimes a dipper arm extension, before it decides the tool.
  • 03 — The quality of healing A clean cut closes;
a torn cut opens a door to disease.
On a tree that is kept, that is not a detail.
  • 04 — What becomes of the branches Left, mulched or carted away:
gathering often represents more time than the cutting.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The real height and reach Measured from the position where the machine can stand, not from the foot of the tree.
  • The overhead services They impose distances and instructions that are not open to discussion.
They are dealt with with the network operator.
  • The stability, machine at full stretch A tool at the end of the arm at a great height is the unfavourable case on the load chart.
  • The period of working Nesting, local orders, the client's specification:
the window is fixed with them.
