Arm-mounted flail mower

Mulching head fitted on the arm of an excavator, mulching the vegetation of a bank along a small country road
The mulching head is walked along the verge; here it is an excavator that carries it.
Synthetic image.

An articulated arm that carries a mulching head and walks it along a verge.
Its usual carrier is not an excavator:
it is a tractor.

Other names for this tool: verge flail mower, pruning arm, verge mulcher, arm-mounted brush cutter.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the offset arm gives the tractor the sideways reach it lacks. On the right, on an excavator, only the mulching head is fitted at the end of the arm. Computer-generated image.

Left: the offset arm gives the tractor the sideways reach it lacks.
Right: on an excavator, only the mulching head is fitted at the end of the arm.
What sets it apart:
it exists to give the tractor a sideways reach — the excavator already has one.

The tractor stays on the road, the arm reaches out to the bank.
The mulch falls back on the spot, there is nothing to pick up.
Synthetic video.

Let us say it frankly, because it is useful to know:
the flail mower is first of all a farm tractor attachment. The offset arm exists to give the tractor a sideways reach it does not have, and the tractor moves forward continuously while the head works.
It is that pairing that makes the output over a long length.

On an excavator, the machine's arm is already the flail mower's arm:
what fits at the end is the mulching head alone.
You gain in accessibility — the bottom of a ditch, a steep bank, the back of a crash barrier — and you lose in length treated per day.
The two carriers do not replace one another:
they complement one another.

Comparing the output of a flail mower on a tractor with that on an excavator makes no sense. The tractor moves forward without stopping;
the excavator repositions itself.
If your need is a long, regular, clear length, tell us:
we will tell you that the excavator is not the right carrier. See the agricultural trade.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 1 to 25 t.
For example, on a 5 to 10 t excavator, the weight is generally from 190 to 650 kg.
The flail mower fits an excavator or a tractor.
It is mounted via a mounting plate, on all couplers.
The excavator class or the tractor power, and the coupler system: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What the tool does

This arm-mounted flail mower is used for maintaining green spaces.
For example, for a cutting width of 1 050 mm: weight from 190 to 480 kg.
Reaches, height over the hedge, cutting diameter, working width and weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

The flail mower runs hydraulically, on a continuous function, or from the tractor's power take-off.
It generally needs from 20 to 160 l/min, at a pressure from 170 to 250 bar, depending on the size of the machine.
The flow, the pressure and the rotor power: we calculate them with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Tell us which carrier you have, the annual length to be maintained and what makes it difficult:
ditches, banks, obstacles.
If the tractor is the right choice, we will tell you so.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Rotary mulcher and flail mower Principle — a flail or hammer rotor, mounted directly at the end of the excavator arm.
Use — it reaches the bottom of a ditch, a steep bank or the back of a crash barrier, where the tractor cannot go.
  • Forestry mulching head Principle — a heavy rotor mounted on the excavator, made for wood rather than for verge grass.
Use — it opens a right-of-way or reclaims overgrown land, and what it mulches stays on the ground as chips.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The carrier actually available A tractor, an excavator, a municipal tool carrier:
the answer changes completely according to what you already have.
  • 02 — The nature of the length of work A clear, regular verge, or ditches, banks and difficult points:
that is what separates the two carriers.
  • 03 — The head fitted at the end Flails, discs, saws:
the arm is only a support, it is the head that decides the result.
  • 04 — The hydraulics required A head turns continuously, and an arm with several controls calls for more than a single circuit.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The carrier, before anything else On an excavator, the fitting is done with a mounting plate and is checked machine by machine.
  • The number of hydraulic circuits available Driving the head and controlling the arm do not share a single circuit.
  • Stability on a cross slope A tool offset on a bank shifts the centre of gravity:
the load chart is read at maximum reach.
  • The working window Nesting periods, local orders, the authority's specification:
they are settled with the client.
