Coupling and adapting

Liebherr system

Quick coupler seen at three-quarters, off the machine
A quick coupler unit, off the machine:
the hook that takes the pin, the locks and their position indicator.
The image shows the principle common to all standards, not one standard in particular.
Illustration based on an existing product.

An interface specific to the manufacturer, fitted as original equipment on its machines.
It is read at the end of the dipper arm, never from a catalogue.

Other names for this tool: Liebherr coupler, Liebherr quick coupler, Schnellwechsler.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the manufacturer's original coupler locked onto the digging bucket. On the right, the coupler is checked on the machine before the tool is chosen. Computer-generated image.

Left: the manufacturer's original coupler locked onto the digging bucket.
Right: the coupler is checked on the machine before the tool is chosen.
What sets it apart:
it is a manufacturer's standard, so tied to the machine and not to the market.
Computer-generated image.

A manufacturer's standard is not chosen:
it arrives with the machine.
That is the fundamental difference from a market standard such as the S type or the CW type, which an owner adopts because it is widespread.

The consequence is direct for buying a tool:
the coupler is read first, the tool is chosen afterwards.
A second-hand machine may very well have been re-equipped with another standard by a previous owner, and nothing in its documentation will say so.

We publish no dimension and no tonnage range for this standard. It is not an oversight:
we hold none that we can show, and a wrong dimension on a coupler sheet means a mounting plate that does not fit.
The check is made on your machine, in the study. See why we leave boxes empty.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 11 to 75 t.
For example, on a 10 to 20 t excavator, the weight is generally from 175 to 320 kg.
It is a manufacturer's standard.

What the tool does

It is used to connect the tool to the machine.
For example, on a 10 to 20 t excavator: pin diameter from 60 to 80 mm, pin centres from 330 to 530 mm.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

Depending on the version, it is mechanical or hydraulic.
For the hydraulic version, the flow and pressure: we calculate them with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Send us a photograph of the end of the dipper arm and the model of your excavator.
We will tell you what fits on it, without your having to identify the standard yourself.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — What is fitted on the machine, read on the machine It is the only reading that holds.
The model of the excavator is not enough to deduce it:
the same machine may have been re-equipped.
  • 02 — The version, mechanical or hydraulic A hydraulic coupler locks from the cab.
It assumes a dedicated line, and that line is checked before, not after.
  • 03 — What you already own If your fleet carries this standard, staying with it avoids multiplying mounting plates.
If you alternate with hired machines, the question arises differently.
  • 04 — Obtaining the mounting plates A manufacturer's standard is less widespread than a market standard.
That weighs on lead times, and it is a point the study prices case by case.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The coupler area, in a photograph A photograph of the end of the dipper arm, taken from the side and then from the front.
On its own it contains what is needed to identify the interface.
  • The engraving or the plate, if it is legible It sometimes carries a reference.
When it is worn away, the photograph takes over.
  • The presence of a hydraulic line at the end of the dipper arm It decides between the mechanical version and the hydraulic version.
  • The exact model and year of the machine They do not replace the reading.
They allow it to be cross-checked.
  • The locking and its indicator A lock whose indicator does not return to position is a repair to be dealt with before any tool is bought.
