Maintaining green spaces

Hammer flail mulcher for tractors

An agricultural tractor shreds the tall grass of a verge with a hammer flail mulcher offset to the side, along a country road; a fine green mulch remains on the ground, nobody is visible.
The offset mulcher follows the edge, the tractor stays on the road.

A horizontal rotor fitted with hammers or knives.
It shreds grass, brush and stalks,
and leaves a fine mulch on the spot.

Other names for this tool: horizontal-shaft mulcher, flail mower, verge mulcher, vine prunings mulcher, set-aside mulcher, offset mulcher.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the horizontal rotor and the rear roller leave a fine, even mulch. On the right, the rotary mulcher, with its blades turning flat, cuts the grass more coarsely. Computer-generated image.

Left: the horizontal rotor and the rear roller leave a fine, even mulch.
Right: the rotary mulcher, with its blades turning flat, cuts the grass more coarsely.
What sets it apart:
the rotor turns horizontally, across the direction of travel, and the rear roller sets the cutting height.
Computer-generated image.

A horizontal rotor, driven by the power take-off or by a hydraulic motor, turns hammers or knives under a closed housing; a counter-blade refines the mulch, a rear roller carries the tool and sets the height.
Depending on the model, the mulcher is offset to the side by cylinder, is mounted at the front or at the rear, raises a flap to let the material through, or follows the ditch at the end of a swivelling arm.

This is the tool for set-aside land, maize and sunflower stalks, vine prunings and orchard prunings, verges and ditches.
Unlike the rotary mulcher, whose blades turn flat, it chops finely and throws few stones.

A mulcher that touches the ground wears its hammers and throws soil. The height is set with the rear roller or the skids, on the actual plot.
The useful width, power and output depend on the model, not on a generic figure.

02 What we check with you

On which machine?

A hammer flail mulcher fits a farm tractor, not an excavator.
Depending on the model, it hitches to the three-point linkage, at the front or the rear, or to a tool-carrier arm.
The minimum and maximum tractor power, and the linkage category: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What the tool does

It is used for green space maintenance.
Its working width and its weight: we calculate them with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It is driven by the power take-off, or by a hydraulic motor for arm-mounted heads.
The power take-off speed and the number of spool valves: we calculate them with you for your machine.

Your study sets the exact value for your machine.

Don't have these figures?
A photo of the machine is enough to start.

03 Your study

Have your equipment checked.

Describe what you are shredding, the area, and the tractor that will carry the mulcher.
Specify whether you work along roadsides or in rows.

What we need to answer you
  • Your tractor Its power, in hp.
  • The power take-off Its speed: 540 or 1000 rpm.
  • The hitch The three-point linkage category.
  • The hydraulics The spool valves available.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — The vegetation Grass, brush, maize stalks, vine prunings, pruning wood:
the shape of the hammers or knives is chosen with what is being shredded.
  • 02 — Where you mulch Open field, vine or orchard row, verge, ditch, embankment:
the side offset, the low housing or the swivelling arm decide.
  • 03 — The machine and the hitch Front or rear linkage, tool-carrier arm:
the mulcher is chosen with the power of the tractor and the speed of its power take-off.
  • 04 — The expected mulch Coarse or fine, left in a windrow or spread:
the counter-blade and the adjustable flap change the result.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • Power and power take-off They are checked with the actual width and vegetation:
we also check the speed and direction of rotation.
  • The oil flow For an arm-mounted mulcher or a hydraulic offset:
we check the flow and the number of spool valves of the tractor.
  • The guards Housing, stone-guard chains, side guard:
we check what a busy roadside demands.
  • Driving on the road Offset retracted, overall width, signalling:
we check what the tool allows before driving on the road.
