Block grab

Two flat jaws squeezing a block of dressed stone by its sides, laying it on a dry stone wall under construction. No sling, and the workers stand behind the barriers, far from the load.
It takes the block by the sides:
no sling to pass round, so nobody in contact.

It takes the block by the sides.
No sling to pass round, so nobody to send into contact with it:
that is the real argument.

Other names for this tool: stone grab, masonry grab, concrete block grab, block handler.

01 Use

What it is for

On the left, the grab clamps the block by its faces and sets it on the wall. On the right, on the sling, the block wrapped in straps tilts and has to be guided. Computer-generated image.

Right: on the sling, the block wrapped in straps tilts and has to be guided.
What sets it apart:
its real argument is not the speed, it is that it no longer sends anybody into contact with the block.
Computer-generated image.

The block is squeezed between two jaws, often faced so as not to mark the stone.
The driver presents it, adjusts it, lays it:
the slinging movement, which assumes somebody in contact with the load, disappears from the cycle.

Retaining walls, landscape rock armour, stone steps, precast units:
everywhere regular masses are laid at a precise place.
The overlap with the rock-armour grab is wide; the difference lies in how regular the blocks are.

A block held by squeezing holds by friction, and the friction depends on the state of the faces. A stone that is damp, earthy or irregular is not squeezed like a dry precast unit.
It is that point, and not the capacity announced, that decides the safety of the movement. See the safety check valve.

02 Key technical data

On which machine?

They exist for machines from 2 to 62 t.
For example, on an excavator over 20 t, the weight is generally from 1 500 to 3 350 kg.
It fits all quick couplers, or directly on the pins.

What the tool does

It grips blocks and rotates continuously through 360°.
For example, on an excavator over 20 t: maximum opening from 1 867 to 2 900 mm, width from 695 to 1 600 mm.
Its maximum opening: we calculate it with you for your machine.

What is needed on the hydraulic side

It needs two hydraulic functions: one for opening, the other for rotation.
It generally needs from 30 to 150 l/min, at a pressure from 200 to 320 bar, depending on the size of the machine.
The flow: we calculate it with you for your machine.

03 Your study

Have your machine checked.

Describe the blocks and the structure:
nature, regularity, height of laying.
Tell us also how you handle them today.

What we need to answer you
  • Your machine Its make and its tonnage.
  • The auxiliary circuit Its flow in l/min, its pressure in bar, single- or double-acting.
  • The coupler in place Its system and its class.
  • The work The use, and the material.

Without these details, the study still begins: we will ask you for them.

Not to be confused
  • Rock-armour grab Principle — clawed jaws that bite into natural rock, where a flat jaw would slip.
Use — it places heavy, irregular blocks one by one, on a riverbank, a revetment or at the toe of a slope.
04 Choice

What determines the choice

  • 01 — How regular the blocks are Rough rock armour or precast:
the jaw and the squeezing are not chosen in the same way.
  • 02 — The useful opening It is taken on the largest block actually handled, not on the one in the catalogue.
  • 03 — The facing of the jaws A facing stone that is marked is a stone to be replaced.
  • 04 — The rotation Laying a block at the angle wanted without moving the machine is what makes the output.
05 Check

What is checked before ordering

  • The type and size of the blocks Photographs and dimensions taken on the site.
  • The structure to be built A retaining wall is not bank rock armour.
  • The load chart at the laying reach The laying is done far from the machine, almost always.
  • The movement on the ground Who is working beside the structure during the laying.
